Before you need it

Spare Car Keys

A spare made from the key you already have usually costs much less than replacing every key after the last one disappears. We bring the blank or remote to you, cut it, program it and test both keys.

Two matching car keys side by side on an entry table

A spare costs far less than starting from zero.

Made from the key you have

We read the cuts on your working key and copy them onto a fresh blank. If your key has a chip or buttons, the new one is then added to the car as an extra key, which many vehicles allow. The key you already carry keeps working just as before.

Why waiting costs more

With one good key in hand, a spare is a simple job. Lose that key first and it becomes a lost all car keys job, where the key has to be worked out from the car itself. That takes more work, more parts and a bigger bill, so the cheaper path is a spare made now.

Families and work trucks

A second driver at home, a teenager with a brand-new license, a crew sharing one work truck: each is a good reason for an extra key.

Keep the spare in the house or with someone you trust. A spare left inside the car can’t help you when the doors are locked.

How it works

Getting a spare made

  1. Tell us what you drive

Share the make, model and year, and describe your current key: plain metal, remote head, flip key or push-button fob.

  2. We bring the right blank

The matching blank or remote rides along in the van, so there’s usually no second trip.

  3. We cut and program it

Your new key is cut to match the old one, then paired with the car.

  4. We test both keys

Doors, buttons and the engine start get tried with the old key and the new one before we drive off.

Key types

Which spare fits your car

  • Basic metal key

Older vehicles without a chip only need a key cut. It’s the simplest spare there is.

  • Chip (transponder) key

It looks like a plain key, but a chip in the head talks to the car. It has to be cut and then programmed.

  • Remote head key

The blade and the lock buttons share one head, and a single visit covers both parts.

  • Flip key

The blade folds into the remote. Like the original, the spare needs cutting and programming.

  • Push-button start key

No key to turn in the ignition, only a fob the car senses nearby. See key fobs and remotes for how we program these.

Deals

Two deals to ask about while we’re there.

Locked out today? If we make your spare on the same trip, the lockout is free.

  • 50% OFF Your second car key or remote Car keys and remotes only. When we make two car keys or remotes for the same vehicle on one visit, you pay half price for the lower-priced one. A key with its matching remote counts as one.
  • FREE LOCKOUT Car lockout, when we make you a spare key Car lockouts only. We make the spare key on that same trip.

These deals stack: one job can use both.

FAQ

Spare key questions

Is a copied key as good as the original?

A copy cut on a proper machine and programmed to the car works the same as the key it came from. If your original is badly worn, tell us: in many cases the spare can be cut from the vehicle’s information instead of copying the wear.

Can you add a spare for a push-button start car?

On many makes and models, yes. We program the new fob as an extra key, so the one you have keeps working. Give us the make, model and year and we’ll confirm before booking the visit.

Where should I keep my spare car key?

Somewhere safe and away from the car, like a drawer at home or with a relative nearby. A key hidden on the car or left in the glove box does nothing for you during a lockout, and it can help a thief.

Can you make spares for a work truck or company vehicles?

Yes, for many makes and models. We cut and program extra keys for business vehicles right at your lot, and you get an itemized receipt for your records.

Do I have to bring my car to you?

No. We’re mobile, so for most vehicles the spare is cut and programmed wherever the car is: in your driveway, at the office or in a store lot.

Have one key? Add a backup.

Tell us what you drive and which key you have now, and we’ll quote the spare before we come out whenever possible.
