Smart Lock Installation

Bought a smart lock already? We’ll fit it. Haven’t yet? We can supply one. Either way, it gets set up and tested, so it works properly from day one. Every smart deadbolt needs a door that closes cleanly, and we make sure yours does.

Your lock or ours

Already bought a lock? We install it. Still choosing? We can supply one for you. We work with brands such as Schlage, Yale, August, Kwikset and Level. If you haven’t bought one yet, we can talk through which features fit your household before you spend anything.

Door fit first

A smart lock moves its bolt with a small motor. If the bolt drags against the strike, the motor works harder, the batteries run down early and the bolt may not finish locking.

So we check the alignment, the strike and the latch before the lock goes on. Fixing the fit first saves batteries and service calls later.

Set up before we leave

We add your codes, help you pair the app on your phone and run a full test, so you’re not left reading the manual on the porch. If you rent the place out, we’ll walk you through adding and deleting guest codes in the app.

How it works

Your smart lock install

  1. Your door, your lock

Name the door and the lock, or describe what you’re hoping for and we’ll suggest a few options.

  2. We check the door and bolt

Alignment and strike come first, since a smart lock is fussier than a plain deadbolt.

  3. Install and set up

The lock goes on, then we set the codes and the basic app pairing.

  4. Test every way in

Keypad, app and the backup key all get tried before we leave.

Good to know

Worth deciding before you buy

  • Keypad, app or both

Some locks open with a code, some with a phone, many with either. Think about who will be using it.

  • Wi-Fi or Bluetooth

Bluetooth works when you’re near the door. Wi-Fi models, or a bridge, let you check and lock it from anywhere.

  • Batteries

Most run on regular batteries and warn you when they’re low. Swap them when the warning starts.

  • Keep a key backup

Most smart deadbolts keep a keyway. Store a key somewhere safe for the day the batteries give out.

  • Codes for everyone

Give family, sitters and rental guests their own codes, and delete one without touching the others.

  • Door fit

A door that sticks or rubs will fight a smart lock. Sort out the fit first.

FAQ

Smart lock questions

Which smart lock brands do you install?

We install brands such as Schlage, Yale, August, Kwikset and Level. Have a different one? Share the model and we’ll let you know.

What happens when the batteries die?

Most locks warn you for a good while before the batteries run out. If they do die, you can usually still get in with the backup key, and some models let you power the keypad from outside for a moment.

Can a dog walker or guest get their own code?

Yes, on most keypad locks. Everyone can have their own code that you delete later, and some apps let you set codes that only work at certain times.

Can you supply the smart lock for me?

Yes. We can supply the lock and install it, or install one you already own. We’ll help you pick a model that suits the door and the way your household comes and goes.

Will I still need a house key?

Usually, yes: most smart locks keep a key cylinder as the backup if the batteries die or the electronics fail, and it can often be set to the same key as your other doors; see lock rekeying.

Want a smart lock that just works? Call us.

Describe the door and the lock you have in mind, and we’ll explain the cost before we come out whenever possible.
