Exit doors that work

Panic Bars & Door Closers

Exit doors take more abuse than any other door in the building. We install, adjust and repair the bars and closers that keep them opening, closing and latching properly.

A push-bar exit device and a door closer on a steel back door

Exit doors take a beating. We keep them working.

Exit bars and devices

Push bars let people leave with a single press, even with their hands full. We install, service and replace them for restaurants, shops, schools, churches and warehouses around the valley.

Most exit devices latch into the frame at the side of the door; others use vertical rods that catch in the frame above and the floor below. We work on both kinds.

Door closers

A closer controls how fast a door swings shut and how firmly it latches. We adjust the speed and the latch, and replace closers that leak or have worn out.

Wind and heating or cooling can push against a door, so the closer setting matters more than most people expect. A good setting shuts and latches the door every time without slamming it.

Easy-to-use hardware

Lever handles are easier than knobs for many people, including anyone carrying boxes or with a weak grip. We offer ADA-friendly lever options for doors that need them, including lever trim on the outside of exit doors.

How it works

An exit-door visit

  1. Describe the door

Which exit it is (front, back or side) and what it’s doing: sticking, slamming, not latching.

  2. We inspect it all

The exit device, the closer, the hinges and the frame, because one worn part often strains the others.

  3. Adjust, repair or replace

Most problems are fixed with adjustment or new parts; badly worn hardware gets replaced.

  4. Test the cycle

We open, close and latch the door again and again until it works every time, hold-open included if the door has one.

Warning signs

Signs an exit door needs work

  • The bar sticks

It needs a hard push, or springs back slowly.

  • The door won’t latch

It closes but drifts open again, or needs a tug to catch.

  • The door slams

The closer has lost its control and lets the door bang shut.

  • It won’t close all the way

It stops short and stays open a crack, which wastes heat and invites trouble.

  • The closer leaks oil

An oily closer has failed inside and usually needs replacing.

  • The hold-open won’t hold

The dogging feature, which keeps the bar pressed in while you’re open, slips or won’t engage.

FAQ

Exit door questions

Can an existing door get a panic bar?

On many doors, yes. We check the door’s width, material and frame first to make sure the bar will fit and latch properly. Glass storefront doors usually take a narrower style of bar.

What makes our door slam shut?

The closer is either set too fast or worn out inside. Often an adjustment fixes it; an oil-leaking closer needs replacing. A slamming door wears its hinges and frame and can catch fingers, so it’s worth fixing soon.

Can a panic bar door lock from the outside?

It can, once outside trim with a key cylinder is added. Anyone inside still pushes out freely, while people outside need a key.

Do you replace door closers or only adjust them?

Both. We adjust closers that just need tuning and replace the ones that are leaking or worn past adjusting. If a door needs to stay open during the day, ask about closers with a hold-open setting, where your fire rules allow one.

Do you work on exit doors at schools and churches?

Yes, along with restaurants, shops, offices and warehouses. We can schedule the work at a quieter time, and look at every exit door on the same visit.
