Same locks, new keys

Lock Rekeying

Rekeying turns every old key into scrap metal while your locks, finish and handles stay right where they are. It’s a simple way to decide, from today, who can open your doors.

What rekeying does

A lock cylinder holds tiny spring-loaded pins, each sized for one particular key. We take the cylinder out, swap those pins for a fresh set, and cut keys to match. From the outside the lock looks and works as it always did, but every key made before today stops turning it.

When it’s the right call

You just moved in, whether it’s an older house in Boise or a new build in Meridian, Star or Kuna, and you can’t know how many copies the builder, past owners or contractors kept.

A set of keys went missing on a run or at the gym. A roommate or tenant moved out and still has a copy. Each of these is a good reason to rekey.

A single key for the whole house

If the locks on your front, back and garage-entry doors are compatible, we can set them all to one key. That means a lighter key ring, and nobody fumbling in the dark for the right one.

How it works

Your rekey visit, step by step

  1. Count your locks

Let us know the number of doors that should take the new key, counting the garage entry and any side door.

  2. Cylinders come out

We take each cylinder out of its lock, one door at a time.

  3. New pins, new keys

Fresh pins go in to suit a new key, and we cut your new keys (two come with the rekey).

  4. Every key, every lock

Each new key gets tried in every lock before you get them, so nothing sticks later.

Choose

Rekey or replace?

  • Rekey when the locks work well

If the locks turn smoothly and their look still suits you, rekeying gives you new keys without paying for new hardware.

  • Replace when they’re broken or dated

A lock that was forced, or one you simply want to look different, is a better fit for new locks and deadbolts. A lock that only sticks or wobbles may just need lock repair.

  • Mixed brands

Locks from different makers don’t always take the same key. One of them may need a new cylinder before every door can share a key.

  • Landlords and tenant changes

A rekey between renters keeps the next tenant’s keys theirs alone, and it fits easily into a move-out.

  • Count what you hand out

Keep track of who gets a copy. Fewer copies floating around means fewer surprises later.

FAQ

Rekeying questions

How many keys do I get after a rekey?

Two keys come with the rekey. Need more for everyone in the house? Tell us when you book, and we’ll cut extra copies on the visit.

Can a smart lock be rekeyed?

Often, yes. Many smart locks keep a regular key cylinder as a backup, and that cylinder can usually take new pins to match your other doors. A few brands use their own cylinder design, so let us know the model when you ring.

Does someone need to be home for a rekey?

Someone has to open the door for us and take the new keys at the end, whether that’s you or a person you’ve arranged. Rental owners and property managers can arrange it with us when they book.

Does rekeying make a lock stronger?

No. Rekeying retires the old keys, but the lock itself stays exactly as strong as before. For sturdier hardware, see new locks and deadbolts.

Should landlords rekey between tenants?

It’s good practice. A past tenant may have made copies you never saw, and a rekey costs far less than dealing with a problem later. Property managers can schedule it alongside the move-out.
